Following 2 years in prion disease research at the NINDS under Nobel laureate, D Carleton Gajdusek, Dr. Roos trained in neurology at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. He then stayed at Johns Hopkins Medical Center to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Richard T Johnson in neurovirology and neuroimmunology. His faculty position at the University of Chicago Medical Center has been interrupted as a Research Associate, Visiting Professor for 10 months in the laboratory of Dr. Ellie Ehrenfeld in the Cell, Viral, and Molecular Biology Department at the University of Utah, and for a year as a Visiting Scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Bert Semler in the Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Department at the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Roos has published more than 200 papers. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Neurology, has been a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Neuroimmunology, Journal of NeuroVirology, Journal of Virology, and Annals of Neurology and presently serves on the Editorial Board of Virology and Scientific Reports and Associate Editor of Neurology Genetics. He is a member of the US FDA Cellular, Tissues and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee. He formerly served as Chair of the FDA Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies Committee as well as the Chair of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine Committee to Examine Multiple Sclerosis, American Academy of Neurology Science Committee, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association grant review committee, National Multiple Sclerosis Society Research Programs Advisory Committee (which he Chaired), and NIH NINDS grant review study section.
Dr. Roos became Senior Associate Editor of MedLink in charge of the Neuroimmunology section in 2001. In 2018, he became Editor-in-Chief of MedLink
