These early papillomata of 2 weeks duration developed on the back of this 30-year-old woman with yaws. She also had an ulcerative, papillomatous lesion on her left breast that proved to be the initial site of the yaws infection after she breastfed her 13-month-old infant. The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test produced a positive result of 1:8 and was accompanied by the microhemagglutination assay (MHA-TP) test, which was also reactive, or positive. Treatment for this patient consisted of an intramuscular injection of 2.4 mega (million) units of benzathine benzylpenicillin. These early, highly infectious papillomatous lesions, characteristically appear as large, yellow, and crusty.
