The folate-specific transporters reduced folate carrier (RFC) and proton-coupled folate transported (PCFT) are highly expressed in the proximal renal tubule, with known expression of RFC at the basolateral membrane, although RFC may also be present at the apical membrane. RFC function to bring 5-methyl-THF from the blood into the renal tubular epithelium to support intracellular metabolism and from the renal tubular epithelium to the blood to facilitate renal reabsorption of folate. The direction of transfer depends on the amount of available folate in the various compartments. (Source: Shulpekova Y, Nechaev V, Kardasheva S, et al.
