Macrocytes in peripheral blood smear from a patient with megaloblastic anemia
Macrocytosis is the presence of red cells that are larger than normal (macrocytes) in peripheral blood. They occur in peripheral blood as a result of premature release from the marrow. They are commonly seen in pregnant women, newborn infants, and patients with megaloblastic anemia (eg, folic acid deficiency or vitamin B12 deficiency), liver disease, alcoholism, hemolysis, aplastic anemia, and hypothyroidism.
