Cartoon depicting the devastation of wood alcohol (methanol) poisoning during Prohibition under the Volstead Act. The Volstead Act was intended to carry out the intent of the 18th Amendment, ratified in January 1919. Once ethanol was prohibited, liquor was sold illicitly, often adulterated with methanol.
