Ependymoma excision (operative photos)

(A) The cerebellum and tumor are exposed. The ependymoma (yellow arrow) is growing up from the floor of the fourth ventricle and spreading the two cerebellar hemispheres (green arrow). (B) The tumor was discrete and appeared to be totally removed. The arrow points to the remains of a small artery on the floor of the fourth ventricle (brainstem), a source of blood to the tumor. Despite apparent total excision of this tumor, it recurred within a year of surgery. (Contributed by Dr. Sherman Stein.)
