This photomicrograph of a Giemsa-stained specimen, revealed the presence of a sporangium and its supportive columella from an unknown fungal organism in this mucosal tissue sample harvested from the ethmoid sinus of a patient ill with mucormycosis, otherwise known as zygomycosis. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis, also known as zygomycosis, is a rare disease caused by filamentous fungi that affect the nose, paranasal sinuses, and brain.
