Henry Hun's case of lateral medullary syndrome (9)

Henry Hun's case of lateral medullary syndrome (1897), 4 years before the pathology from Wallenberg's case was published. A section through the medulla oblongata at the level of the beginning of the sensory decussation. This shows degeneration of the fibers of the left descending root of the fifth nerve, V, while on the right side, these fibers are healthy, G. The substantia gelatinosa on the left side is not greatly degenerated. There is degeneration of the descending cerebellar tract of Marchi, L, T, and D, and of the right anterior pyramid. Analgesia, thermic anaesthesia, and ataxia, resulting from foci of softening in the medulla oblongata and cerebellum, due to occlusion of the left inferior posterior cerebellar artery. A study of the course of the sensory and co-ordinating tracts in the medulla oblongata. N Y Med J 1897;65:513-9. Edited by Dr. Douglas J Lanska.)
