Miners extracting ore from a mine (3)

Woodcut by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch in Germany (1525-1571), 1556. At the very top, above the mine, a man is using a divining rod to search for precious minerals. In the middle, two men operate a windlass (with a horizontal axis) to lift ore from lower levels of the mine. A rope is wrapped around the barrel in such a manner that a bucket on one end is lowered while the bucket on the other end is raised. At the lower level, miners are using hammers and pickaxes to extract valuable minerals. The ore is then loaded on carts. (Courtesy of the Rijkmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Public domain.
