Mine worker with crushed lead ore

Crushed lead ore at a mine near Creede, Colorado. Creede had been an important lead-producing center in the 19th century but was for many years a "ghost town" until lead mining resumed during World War II to produce metal needed for the war effort. Note that the man is smoking, which involves repeated hand-to-mouth movement in a setting filled with lead dust. (Source: Photograph by Andreas Feininger [1906-1999], December 1942.
