The primary functions of the peroxisomal beta-oxidation system are to degrade VLCFA and pristanic acid and participate in bile acid synthesis. Different enzymes are required for different substrates. Our current knowledge of the pathways for beta-oxidation of VLCFA, pristanic acid, and THCA are shown in blue, red, and green, respectively. SLC27A2 and SLC27A4: very long-chain acyl-CoA synthetases; ACSL1 and ACSL4: long-chain acyl-CoA synthetases; SLC27A5 and SLC27A2: bile acid precursor CoA synthetases.
