X-linked lissencephaly in a newborn and a 2 year old (microscopic structure of the cortex)

(A) The six cortical layers in the normal newborn have an orderly appearance. (B) In the 2-year-old, the six-layered cortex is replaced by a poorly laminated four-layered cortex. The fourth layer extends beyond the limits of the image. (Size bar=1 mm) (Contributed by Dr. Joseph Gleeson.)
