Carbanion structural formula

A carbanion is an anionic form of carbon in which the carbon atom has an unshared pair of electrons and bears a negative charge, usually with three substituents for a total of eight valence electrons. A carbanion has a trigonal pyramidal geometry. In organic chemistry, a carbanion functions as a nucleophile, a reactive intermediate that donates an electron pair to an electrophile to form a chemical bond. (Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
