The child pictured here in this 2000 photograph, held by her father, had been diagnosed with acute flaccid paralysis, 2 months prior to being photographed. The father was bringing his child to a physician for a follow-up evaluation. Since its inception in the fall of 1998, the "Stop Transmission of Polio" (STOP) immunization initiative teams have worked in over 50 countries. In the first years of the program, most STOP team members worked primarily to bolster acute flaccid paralysis surveillance, support National Immunization Days, and conduct polio case investigation and follow-up.
