Release of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus triggers the anterior pituitary to release leutenizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). In men, LH and FSH stimulate the testes to release testosterone, which provides negative feedback to the hypothalamus and pituitary. In women, LH and FSH stimulate the ovary to produce estrogen (and particularly estradiol). Estrogen forms a negative feedback loop by inhibiting the production of GnRH in the hypothalamus.
