This image depicts an anterior view of a patient in Nigeria, ill with the fungal infection known as mucormycosis (phycomycosis), a form of zygomycosis. In this specific patient’s case, the disease was classified as rhino-phycomycosis, having affected the nose, nasal airways, and sinuses, as well as the subcutaneous tissues of the maxilla, and upper lip, producing the distorted facial symmetry you see in this view.
