"Pan" of gold from "dry" panning, Pinos Altos, New Mexico, 1940

Not all the shiny particles are gold but include mica and a few particles of quicksilver (elemental mercury). The gold usually appears in the pan as a minute shiny upper rim of the dirt in the pan.
