South African Working for Water (WfW) workers predominately live in townships that are characterized by low-cost shacks. The space within their homes was limited due to the size of the dwellings and overcrowding from multiple members living together, which likely contributed to their inability to employ protective practices such as storing and washing personal protective equipment separately from household laundry to reduce herbicide exposure risks.
