Glutamatergic inputs from the cortex or thalamus synapse directly onto the head of the dendritic spine, dopaminergic projections from the SNr (VTA in ventral striatum) synapse at the neck of the spine, and cholinergic interneurons influence MSNs largely through “volume” transmission with a paucity of well-defined synapses. Ach – acetylcholine, DA – dopamine, Glu – glutamate. (Contributed by Dr. Roger Albin)
