Because the SNc projects to the striatum as well as to the GPi, GPe, STN, and SNr (not depicted in diagram), dopaminergic deficits disrupt communication of the entire basal ganglia network. The reduction of striatal dopamine is positively correlated to the degree of cell loss in the SNc. (Contributed by Dr. Rita Tranquilli.)
